The timing for the COVID-19 outbreak could not be worse for the PHL and its loyal fans. Just as the PHL I Cup Playoffs were set to begin, with Zack and Snakes being heavy favorites to meet in the Finals, the University of Florida recently announced that students are encouraged to go home for the rest of the semester. The Commissioner was forced to make this solemn message to the PHL community:
"During this time of uncertainty, as pertains to COVID-19, it pains us to say that the Infinity Cup Playoffs will be suspended and played this August.... We feel your pain during this difficult time. Follow the PHL on social media, as we will continue to provide content during the upcoming months. We ask that you stay safe, wash your hands, and we'll be back, better, and stronger than ever before!"
When I spoke with Commissioner Snakes this morning, he emphasized to me that nothing will be canceled, just postponed, "I know it's gonna be odd having a postseason tournament five or six months after the season ends, but these are crazy times." The league hopes to begin the second PHL season (PHL II) immediately after the playoffs conclude. There are unconfirmed reports that player-members will re-brand themselves as different locations for PHL II. These are diffucult times for everyone. The PHL is incredibly thankful for the medical workers risking their lives everyday to combat this virus.
